April Showers Do Bring May Flowers - Macrame Project

Materials:

  • 36 yards 6mm Bonnie Braid
  • One Metal Umbrella Frame (See Below)
  • One 16mm round wood bead
  • Trims of your choice - flowers, ribbons, etc.

Instructions:

  • Cut cord as follows: 9 cords 2 ¼ yards long; 4 cords 2 yards long and 3 cords 1 yard long.
  • Fold one 2 ¼ yard cord in half. Slide both ends of this cord through the Bead, leaving approximately ½" of loop above the bead. Double Half Hitch this cord at top center of umbrella frame.
  • Reverse Lark's Head plus Half Hitch all cords onto top rounded part of frame using as follows: from left to right two 1 yard cords; two 2 yard cords; four 2 ¼ yard cords; from the center of umbrella the four 2 ¼ yard cords; two 2 yard cords and one 1 yard cord.

Number cords 1 - 32.

  • Row 1: Tie 2 Square Knots using cords 13 - 20.
  • Row 2: Tie 3 Square Knots using cords 11 - 22.
  • Row 3: Tie 4 Square Knots using cords 9 - 24.
  • Row 4: Tie 5 Square Knots using cords 7 - 26.
  • Row 5: Tie 6 Square Knots using cords 5-28.
  • Row 6: Tie 7 Square Knots using cords 3 - 30.
  • Row 7: Tie 8 Square Knots using cords 1 - 32.
  • Row 8: Lay cords 1 and 2 and cords 32 and 31 under frame and to the outside. Double Half Hitch these cords onto the frame. Tie 7 Square Knots using cords 3 - 30.
  • Row 9: Bring cords 1 and 2 and 32 and 31 back under frame and to the inside. Tie 8 Square Knots using 1 - 32.
  • Row 10: Repeat Row 8.

Double Half Hitch (DHH) cords 1 - 4 onto bottom of frame. Tie one Square Knot (SK) using cords 5 - 8. DHH cords 9 - 16. Tie one SK using cords 17 - 20. DHH cords 21-24. Tie one SK using cords 25 - 28. DHH cords 29 - 32. DHH all remaining cords to frame.

Trim and fuse every other cord to back of frame. Trim the remaining 16 cords to 2 inches in length. Loop each cord around to the next and fuse at back of frame for a scalloped look.

Fold the 4 yard cord in half with ends even and place behind the top part of handle. Tie Half Knots down handle, covering completely, trim and fuse cord ends.
